With twelve years of experience, Dr. Boneva specializes in trauma surgery, surgical critical care, emergency surgery, and acute care surgery. She has an extensive volunteer experience, and has served on health mission trips to Moldova, Kenya, Russia, Costa Rica, and Bulgaria. As a trauma surgeon, she specializes in the operative and non-operative management of traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting. In addition to English, Dr. Boneva speaks Russian and Bulgarian. She is the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions, including the 2015 Certificate for Recognition for Dedication in Teaching (General Surgery Residency program at KRMC), the Foreign Messenger Award, as well as the PRIDE Award for Patient First and the PRIDE Award for Excellence from Kendall Regional Medical Center. Dessy Boneva MD, FACS, is a graduate of University of Health Sciences Antigua in Antigua & Barbuda. Her postgraduate training includes a research fellowship at Baltimore VA Medical Center in Baltimore, MD (2003-2004), followed by a first general surgery residency at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD (2004-2006) and a second general surgery residency at Dartmouth College (2006-2009). Dr. Boneva is fellowship-trained in surgical critical care at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (2009-2010) and trauma and acute care surgery at the University of Maryland/R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland (2010-2011). Dr. Boneva completed her undergraduate education in mathematics and engineering in her native country, Bulgaria. She attained board certification in general surgery and surgical critical care with the American Board of Surgery. Furthermore, she is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
